On-grid solar
For sites with a reliable electricity grid
- Connected to the grid: use solar during the day and grid electricity when solar generation is low.
- Typically operates without batteries. Export and net-metering arrangements depend on local approvals.
- A standard on-grid system shuts down during a grid outage for safety.
Off-grid solar
For remote sites without grid access
- An independent solar system that does not connect to the electricity grid.
- Batteries store energy for use at night or when sunlight is limited.
- Storage adds to the initial cost; available backup depends on battery sizing and energy use.
Hybrid solar
For grid-connected sites that need battery backup
- Combines solar generation, the electricity grid and battery storage.
- Uses solar first, stores available surplus and can draw from the grid or batteries when needed.
- A suitable backup design can support selected loads during outages; export depends on local approvals.
